The UPLB College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) organized a research forum on March 7, 2024, at Gregorio San Agustin Hall, as part of its 115th founding anniversary celebration. Aligned with the college’s thrust of “MASIGASIG na CAFS: Multidisciplinary Agricultural Science and Innovations Geared Towards AGORA SDGs and the Industry Goals,” the forum served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Kicking off the event, Dean Elpidio M. Agbisit, Jr., PhD, formally opened the forum, followed by a compelling keynote address delivered by Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, Executive Director of the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). Dr. Lilian M. Fernando-Corpuz presented the AGORA SDGs and the college’s ongoing research and extension endeavors. Subsequently, an engaging open forum provided participants with an opportunity to voice their concerns on pertinent issues such as existing policies, research formulation, funding, and suggestions for enhancing research and extension projects within the college.
During the afternoon session, undergraduates, graduates, and researchers of CAFS showcased their work virtually through a poster competition. Additionally, young scientists presented their recent studies conducted at international universities. Dr. Arlan James D. Rodeo’s investigation into the postharvest chilling effects on basil flavor revealed how low carbon dioxide concentration mitigates the reduction of volatile compounds crucial for basil’s aroma and flavor. Assistant Professor Angelo C. Castro discussed his innovative study on determining the juiciness of blueberries, introducing a novel tool for measurement and exploring how pectin structure influences juiciness traits. Lastly, Dr. Johnny F. Balidion delved into his research on a cacao pathogen, explaining how abiotic stresses can trigger infestations of this particular pathogen.
Furthermore, industry professionals provided insights into their respective companies. Mr. Rodel P. Anunciado, CEO of Binhi Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory, and Ms. Julieane Camille Lacsina, CEO of GoEDEN, offered glimpses into their businesses and showed their impacts on clients and customers, bettering their way of farming and doing business.
The forum served as a bridge between research products, technology dissemination, and industry partnerships, highlighting the importance of addressing existing challenges to propel CAFS closer to its vision of a resilient agricultural sector. (Ricky Bryan U. Biagtan)
