IPB facilitates training on seed processing and storage

As part of the project “Scaling-out the Utilization of IPB-Developed Seeds for Selected Lowland Vegetables towards Sustainable Seed System”, the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) in partnership with the Department of Agriculture—Regional Field Office 2 (DA-RFO 2), organized a training on seed processing and storage last February 22, 2023 at the IPB seminar room.

Twenty agricultural technicians, farm supervisors, and science research specialists from DA-RFO 2 and Local Government Units (LGUs) of Isabela, Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino participated in the training, which intended to strengthen the participants’ technical capacities with the target of producing their own planting materials for commercial use and distribution.

“We must have a seed supply that is of good quality. Producing good quality seeds can only be achieved if one has proper knowledge of seed production principles,” said Dr. Mary Ann D. Maquilan, project leader.

Meanwhile, Ms. Florita F. Carandang, university researcher and IPB Vegetables and Legumes Section head, discussed the characteristics of a good seed and its classifications based on storage properties. She also shared the important considerations in determining the source of seeds as well as the processes involved in wet and dry seed vegetable processing and storage. According to Ms. Carandang, seed saving is needed to continuously produce desired varieties and ensure supply of crops.

The participants underwent a hands-on activity to boost their appreciation of the seed processing techniques. Afterwards, Mr. Villamor A. Ladia Jr., university researcher and IPB Annual Crops Breeding Division head, accompanied them to the seed production area in IPB.

The participants expressed satisfaction with the half-day activity. Furthermore, they were expected to cascade the training to the seed growers, associations, and cooperatives for the wide adoption of IPB-developed varieties. (Dianne B. Ubaldo)
