IPB Hibiscus Team joins 2nd Gumamela Festival 2023

The IPB Hibiscus Team joined the 2nd Gumamela/Hibiscus Festival held last July 8 at Nonay’s Garden in Calauan, Laguna. The team led by Dr. Maria Luisa D. Guevarra, along with Ms. Agripina O. Rasco, Dr. Mary Ann D. Maquilan, Mr. Raol P. Pamiloza, Mr. Arbert Em. M. Sobreviñas, Ms. Catherine R. Patricio, Mr. Noel O. Melodillar, and Mr. Jerome A. Javier shared their expertise in gumamela care and maintenance.

Dr. Guevarra introduced the current breeding projects of IPB. Mr. Sobreviñas, assisted by Mr. Melodillar and Mr. Javier, led the demonstration of propagation techniques. An open forum followed where Mr. Pamiloza and Dr. Maquilan addressed the participants’ questions on insect pests and diseases, respectively. Ms. Rasco was also awarded a new gumamela hybrid named after her during the program.

The festival was organized by Ms. Jojette Segundo Antonio and Ms. Jho Moral. Other experts including Mr. Rodrigo Joseph Bautista of the International Hibiscus Society, as well as known hibiscus sellers such as Arid & Aroids founder Mr. Neil “Boyet” B.
