The Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), the Local Government Unit of Guiguinto, Bulacan, and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region III – Bulacan conducted a successful training session on the cultural management and propagation of hibiscus held on October 12, 2023, at Guiguinto, Bulacan.

This training is a component of the joint project between IPB and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) entitled “Development of New Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Varieties through Conventional Hybridization and Embryo Rescue”. This initiative seeks to revolutionize hibiscus cultivation through innovative breeding techniques.

The training was attended by various participants, including nursery growers from the municipality, staff from the Municipal Agriculture Office, and professionals from the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO).

The program unfolded with Ms. Angelita Q. Parungao, Director of PSTO-Bulacan, extending a warm welcome to all attendees. Atty. Agatha Paula A. Cruz, the Mayor of Guiguinto, Bulacan, also graced the event, expressed her support, and highlighted the significance of such collaborative endeavors with educational institutions.

Maria Luisa D. Guevarra, the project leader, provided an insightful overview and outlined the training objectives. Her expertise in the field served as a valuable guide for the participants.

In the morning session, participants were taught hibiscus care and maintenance, insect pest management, and disease management by retired plant breeder and project consultant Ms. Agripina O. Rasco, and university researchers Mr. Raol O. Pamiloza and Dr. Mary Ann D. Maquilan, respectively.

In the afternoon, participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations of propagation techniques, including marcotting and grafting, led by experts in the field. This practical experience gave attendees a deeper understanding of propagating hibiscus varieties effectively.

Dr. Roel G. Dela Cruz, the OIC Municipal Agriculturist, delivered the closing remarks, expressing gratitude to the organizers and emphasizing the importance of disseminating such knowledge to enhance hibiscus cultivation in the region.

This collective involvement reflected the shared commitment to strengthening local hibiscus cultivation, ultimately contributing to the growth of the garden industry in Guiguinto, Bulacan. (Ricky Bryan U. Biagtan)
